The Monkey and Yacaré
Guaraní folktale from Paraguay and Argentina (Corrientes)
The yacare is a caiman (or alligator) that can be six to eight feet long. They live in the rivers of Argentina , eastern Bolivia, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil - especially the pantanal region. This story has some unusual Paraguayan Guaraní words in it. It is more fun to just play with them, rather than making up translation.
Note: A guaina is a young girl.
There once was a monkey who wanted to cross the river to get to a big party that was taking place on the other bank. He was afraid to cross, not only because he didn't know how to swim, but also because a huge yacaré lived on the river bank. From the top of a tree, the monkey called to the yacare to see if the alligator would help him cross the river.

-"How are you doing, chamigo! The other day a guaina was asking for you."
-"Really? And what did she say?"
-"She said that you are a very good-looking and elegant lad..."

The yacare shook his tail from joy.

-"Really? Which one? Which young woman? Please tell me!"
-"That one! The one that lives there on the other side of the river and who is very beautiful…"
-"I don't know which one. You tell me."
-"What a pity! Just now she is having a party at her house… but since I can't cross the river , I can't introduce her to you."
-"I can get you to the other side! Climb on my back carefully and I will take you."
-"is it safe?"
-"Of course. You are not going to tell me that you are afraid of the water, are you?
-"Nnnno… of course not."

The monkey climbed up carefully onto the back of the alligator . He was trembling from fright while the alligator shook himself with enthusiasm.

-"While I cross over, tell me what else she said about me…"
-"That you are nice-looking, a good swimmer…"
-"Ha, Ha , Ha… I like that," said the alligator and he kept on inventing.
-"What else? What else?"
-"That you have nice eyes, soft skin, that you know how to sing and dance…"
-"Ha, Ha , Ha… I like that," said the alligator, while he shook his tail even more and the monkey      trembled , more and more frightened.

Since the river was very wide, the alligator kept on asking.

-"And what else did the guaina say about me?"
-"That you are brave, that you are a good worker and that you are so romantic…"
-"Ha, Ha , Ha… I like that," repeated the alligator and shook itself so much that the monkey barely knew how to remain on this back, but he wouldn't do or say anything, afraid of falling into the water.

When they finally arrived at the other side of the river, the alligator asked once more, " Before you introduce me to her, tell me what else she said about me?"

First the monkey took a great leap to firm ground and then he quickly climbed a tree. When he saw that he was high enough to be safe, he yelled, " this is what she said about you: (And he began to insult him in Guaraní.)

Ese tobá mocái,
acä chipá guazú,

Which is Guaraní for:
Head like a big fake cheese bread, Body covered with warts, Eyes darting and cracking like a stew of a poor man, nose like a saw , button eyes, Big mouth …

And is said and it is told, that from that day on the alligator moves very slowly through the water, he is thinking, and looking for an opportunity to take revenge on the monkey.

Me dices?"
